Since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, Shaanxi Province has conducted seven nationwide censuses, in 1953, 1964, 1982, 1990, 2000, 2010, and 2020. The total population of the province was 15.881 million, 20.767 million, 28.904 million, 32.882 million, 36.05 million, 37.327 million, and 39.529 million, respectively.
Meanwhile, Shaanxi began advocating and experimenting with family planning policies as early as the 1960s. Since January 1, 2016, the province has implemented a comprehensive two-child policy.
According to the results of the seventh national census, as of November 1, 2020, among the permanent residents of the province, the population living in cities and towns was 24,769,730, accounting for 62.66% of the permanent population. The population living in rural areas was 14,759,269, accounting for 37.34%.
Compared with the sixth national census in 2010, the urban population increased by 7,710,394, while the rural population decreased by 5,508,773. The proportion of the urban population rose by 16.96 percentage points.
