Education

As of 2023, there were totally 1,418 schools and universities at all levels and of all types, with 325 thousand students at the beginning of enrollment and 1,149.9 thousand students in school. Among which 16 general universities with higher education had 75 thousand newly-enrolled students (including graduates) and 226.2 thousand ones (including graduates) in school; 151 general secondary schools had 110.3 thousand newly-enrolled students and 302.1 thousand internal students; 292 elementary schools had 83.7 thousand newly-enrolled students and 433.7 thousand internal students; 952 kindergartens had 186.6 thousand internal children; and 7 special education schools had 1,257 students at the beginning of the academic year. The total number of full-time teachers at all levels and all varieties in Xiamen amounted to 70.1 thousand.

Science and Technology

By the end of 2023, the city had 4,220 high-tech enterprises (including those have been announced for further approval), 62 technologically advanced service enterprises, 655 provincial-level “little giant” enterprises in science and technology, and 54 municipal science and technology enterprise incubators (including 10 national-level ones). There were 231 national, provincial and municipal key laboratories, 128 engineering technology research centers, 285 enterprise technology centers, 34 national postdoctoral research workstations, 20 provincial postdoctoral innovation practice bases, and 69 provincial and municipal new research and development institutions. There were 35 national registered makerspaces in the city, 2 national professional ones, 35 provincial ones and 92 municipal ones. The amount of domestic patent authorizations was 31,454, of which that for invention was 5,375; while the amount of PCT international patent applications was 510. The number of high-value invention patents per 10,000 people reached 25.2 pieces. 513 scientific and technological achievements was newly registered, 84 of which won the Provincial Science and Technology Awards.

City informatization

The "iXiamen" platform is available through APP, WeChat official account and applet, bringing together 750 applications and services from 54 departments. The platform had 9.49 million real-name authentication users and 119 thousands enterprise users. The Xiamen Channel of Minzhengtong was officially launched in Jan. 2024 and the first batch of online content included 63 high-frequency government services and convenient services such as traffic code, real-time bus path, housing provident fund, human resources and social security, and enterprise establishment.

Xiamen Software Park was approved to set up a provincial artificial intelligence industrial park. Road & Bridge Information Company was successfully listed on the Beijing Stock Exchange. Meitu Technology, 4399, and G-bit Network Technology were among the top 100 internet companies in China; Herfun Information, Fast Netwerk, G-bit Network, Zhonglian Century ranked among Top 20 Internet Growing Companies in China. 34 enterprises, including Meitu Company and Meiya Pico, were selected as the Top 50 Internet Companies in Fujian; 108 enterprises such as White Pigeon Online and Frozen Products Online were selected as the core industrial innovation enterprises of Fujian digital economy, accounting for 30% of the whole province. The 4th China AI Competition, China Animation Industry Annual Conference, China Internet Enterprise Comprehensive Strength Index Conference, China Computer Education Conference, Xiamen International Animation Festival and other activities were successfully held.
