Shaanxi Normal University
Founded in 1944, Shaanxi Normal University is a key construction university under the Ministry of Education and the National “211 Project”. The school now has 21 colleges, two basic teaching departments, 65 undergraduate majors, 159 master's majors, 69 doctoral majors, and 18 postdoctoral research stations. It has comparative advantages in Chinese international education, Chinese literature, Chinese history, international trade, educational psychology, and bioengineering.
The school has two campuses, Chang'an and Yanta, covering an area of over 2,700 acres. The school has nearly 2,800 faculty members, including more than 1,740 full-time teachers. Teachers with doctoral and master's degrees account for 88 percent of the total number of teachers, including nearly 66 percent of doctoral degrees. The school has more than 17,900 full-time undergraduates and more than 12,000 graduate students, more than 40,000 students in continuing education and online education, and more than 1,000 foreign students.
Shaanxi Normal University established the International College of Chinese Studies on the basis of the Department of International Student’s teaching in 2005. This is the leading unit and the management department of the international students. It is responsible for the training and management work of the undergraduate majors of Chinese Language and Literature (International Students) and the postgraduate students of Chinese International Education (International Students).
Xi'an Jiaotong University
Xi'an Jiaotong University is one of the earliest universities under the Ministry of Education and one of the earliest institutions of higher learning in China. It is also one of the first batches that entered the national "211" and "985" project construction. In 2017, in the list of “double first-class” constructions announced by the state, the university was selected into a First-class university class A construction college, and eight disciplines were selected for first-class construction disciplines. The school has three campuses, Xingqing, Yanta and Qujiang. It covers an area of about 3,000 acres and has a total construction area of 2.0385 million square meters.
The school is a comprehensive research university with science and engineering characteristics covering 10 disciplines including science, engineering, medicine, economics, management, literature, law, philosophy, education and art. It has 27 colleges (departments) and nine undergraduate academy and 19 affiliated teaching hospitals. There are 5,982 faculty members, including 3,072 full-time teachers. Among the faculty members, there are 40 academicians of the two academies, six Nationally Distinguished Teachers, 93 distinguished professors on Chang Jiang Scholars Program, 40 recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 23 National Experts with Outstanding Contributions, 28 scholars who are enlisted in the National “Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talents Project” and the “New Century National Hundred, Thousand, and Ten Thousand Talents Project”, 29 scholars who won the support as Innovation Team leaders of Ministry of Education, 234 scholars who won the Support Program for New Century Excellent Talents administered by the Ministry of Education, and 511 experts who have made outstanding contributions to the nation and awarded as Specialists Entitled to the State Council Special Allowance.
The school has 82 undergraduate majors, 31 first-level disciplines for the doctoral degree, 45 first-level disciplines for master's degree programs, two authorized doctoral degree programs, 20 master's degree programs, and 25 post-doctoral stations. There are currently eight national key disciplines. There are five national key laboratories, six national engineering (technical) research centers, three national engineering laboratories, five national international science and technology cooperation bases, and one 2011 collaborative innovation center. The National Western Energy Research Institute and the Western China Institute of Quality Science and Technology were established. Currently there are 115 provincial and ministerial-level key scientific research bases. According to data released by ESI, as of March 2018, the school's 14 disciplines entered the top 1 percent of the world's academic institutions, and two disciplines entered the top 1 percent.
Xi'an Jiaotong University's foreign student education began in 1959 and was one of the earliest institutions designated by the Ministry of Education to train Chinese government scholarship students. As the first college in China to open an English-speaking medical education institution, since 1995, our school has trained more than 2,000 medical students, ranking first in the country. In 2016, the number of international students at Xi'an Jiaotong University reached 2,226, and the international students came from 122 source countries. Among them, there are 1,687 Degree students, 859 undergraduates, 618 masters, and 210 doctors. Our school plans to reach 3,000 international students by 2020.
Chang'an University
Directly affiliated to the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, Chang'an University is one of the national Project 211 key universities and one of the Project 985 Predominant Discipline Innovation Platform universities. Characterized by its focus on nurturing professional talents in highways and transportation, territorial resources, and urban-rural development, in more than 60 years Chang'an University has graduated more than 250,000 students at different levels. Chang’an University has 21 schools or departments, five national-level key disciplines, 26 provincial-level key disciplines, eight post-doctoral research stations, nine first-tier doctoral programs, 34 first-tier master programs, 40 undergraduate specialties as well as 10 disciplines authorized to confer master degrees, and 16 more specifically enrolling master degree engineering students. At present, the full-time student population of Chang’an University exceeds 33,000; including 9,000 doctoral and master postgraduates and international students. Chang’an also has the world's only university-based comprehensive automobile testing ground.
The university's enrollment of international students started in 1956. To date, it has turned out more than 4,000 graduates from nearly 70 countries including the United States, Germany, Japan, Australia, Vietnam, Tanzania and Yemen. There are now more than 800 international students studying there. The university has established inter-university cooperation with over 100 higher education and scientific research institutions from more than 20 countries and regions such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, Ukraine, Japan and South Korea.
Established in the year 2006, the International Education School of Chang'an University recruits and manages international students and focuses on educational research as well as the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language. In 2018, the number of international students studying in the International Education School was 1012. The school has 15 departments, and 55 disciplines. Since 2010, Chang'an University has been offering undergraduate courses, taught in English, in civil engineering (School of Civil Engineering), international business and trade (School of Economics and Management), and electronic information (School of Information Engineering). In 2017, it opened seven master and doctoral courses with lectures in English for Chinese government scholarship students and self-financed international students, including an MBA program and others in structural engineering, architecture, surveying and mapping (field of study: geodesy and survey engineering), surveying and mapping (field of study: cartography and geographical information engineering), traffic information engineering and control, logistics engineering and management, and information and communication engineering. The mechanical engineering program presented in English was added in 2018.
Northwest University
Northwest University started in 1902 as the University of Shaanxi and the college for officials (Shi Xue Guan) of the intensive training division of the Imperial University of Peking. Known as Northwest University since 1912, it is directly affiliated to the Ministry of Education as a comprehensive university and a national Project 211 development university.
NWU has 3 campuses: the Taibai campus, the Taoyuan campus and the Chang’an campus. They cover a total area of more than 1,573,000 square meters, or approximately 400 acres, and comprise 23 schools and departments, plus a graduate school, and with a total of 86 undergraduate degree programs. Currently the university is authorized to confer doctoral degrees in 24 first-tier disciplines, master’s degrees in 37 first-tier disciplines, and professional programs in 14 categories. NWU has developed 1 first-tier national key discipline (covering 5 second-tier disciplines), 4 second-tier national key disciplines, 1 national key discipline under cultivation and 22 post-doctoral programs. Moreover, NWU houses 1 national key laboratory, 1 national research center for engineering & technology, 3 national bases for international scientific & technological cooperation, 2 bases for the Program of Introducing Talents of Discipline to Universities (aka Plan 111), 1 national demonstration base for innovative talent cultivation, and 3 national & local joint engineering research centers.
Among the university's 2740-strong faculty there are 3 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 10 double employed academicians (professors), 1 academician of the International Academy of the History of Science, 20 experts in the Changjiang Scholars Program, 12 winners of the national Ten Thousand Talents Program, 9 winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 9 winners for the Excellent Young Scientists Fund, 14 winners for the national New Century Talents Project, and 4 Nationally Outstanding Teachers. There are more than 25,000 full-time students, more than 13,000 of whom are full-time undergraduate students; more than 8,000 are graduate students, and more than 900 are international students.
