This animated film, a summer box office hit grossing 1.72 billion yuan, blends traditional painting styles with modern storytelling in an adaptation of "Journey to the West."

The story follows four marginalized demons on a hilarious yet poignant quest to secure scriptures before the real Monk Tang and his disciples, including the legendary Monkey King Sun Wukong.

It triggered overwhelmingly positive reactions and especially appealed to young urban audiences by depicting workplace challenges.

Produced by over 600 artists, it is the first feature adapted from a 20-minute episode of Shanghai Animation Film Studio's popular eight-episode "Yao-Chinese Folktales" anthology series from 2023. It became China's highest-grossing homegrown 2D animated release of all time.
