Comedy legend Chen Peisi returned to cinema after 32 years with "The Stage," which he wrote, directed and starred in, based on his own stage play.
Set during a turbulent era nearly a century ago, it follows a Peking Opera troupe leader who brings his performers to Beijing. Chaos ensues when a teahouse attendant is mistaken for a famed opera star and forced to perform, entangling the troupe with a warlord and rival factions in a series of absurd yet poignant incidents.
A sophisticated comedy with a tragic core, it reflects both its era and our own.
