On March 18, Universal Music Group announced Jay Chou's first full-length project in over three years, featuring 12 new songs and a bonus track, "Christmas Star." The announcement follows a surprise teaser that led his many loyal fans to decode visual clues and speculate as to what was behind the new album.
The title track will be accompanied by a near seven-minute cinematic music video. It blends the visuals, animation and high-end post-production elements people have come to expect with his work. The video will premiere in select theaters on March 24, according to the announcement.
Daily teasers will roll out March 18-23 building up to the big release, and a global physical release will follow on April 10. Each track represents a distinct artistic expression, with Chou exploring new vocal textures and styles. His goal is to capture different shades of "sunlight," from the warmth of introspection to its radiant intensity and movement. A perfect soundtrack for Spring.
The album artwork and music video were filmed at Chapelle Sainte-Jeanne-d'Arc in Paris. The production team created a 19th-century set, a meticulous design to match the narrative. They managed to transform the location into a dramatic visual environment. Shooting at night with nine cranes providing exterior lighting, they illuminated the church's stained glass to create a dark, mysterious and cinematic tone.
In recent social media posts, Chou reflected on the creative process. "Just because my last album was in 2022 doesn't mean I spent three or four years writing this one," he said. "I slowed down my pace of life and let music come naturally — writing when inspiration came, recording when I had time, and filming when possible. Ironically, the most productive period was after my tour ended."
He added, "If I didn't tour, play basketball or wait for lyrics from Vincent Fang, maybe I could finish an album in a month." With the project complete, he said: "The best part is… it's finally here."
The album title also carries a personal story. Legendary pop singer Jacky Cheung coined "Son of the Sun" as a nickname for Chou during Chou's Hong Kong concerts in 2023. This came at a time when the weather cleared before each show amid the many days of rain. Cheung sent Chou a handwritten note along with a box of premium "Children of the Sun" mangoes, acknowledging what he called Chou's lucky streak. Chou said the gesture "brought sunshine to my heart" and jokingly vowed to "claim the title."
The phrase now names his album, symbolizing positivity, energy and creative vitality.
