Editor's note: Spurs Gallery in Beijing is presenting "Encounters: Feng Guodong, 1948–2005," a large-scale retrospective marking two decades since the artist's passing.
The exhibition, spanning two floors, showcases Feng's diverse practice, including paintings, sculptures, installations, works on paper, and archival materials from the 1960s through the early 2000s.
Key works include Feng's iconic "modernist" canvases from the late 1970s and 1980s, later drawings created during his illness, and wood sculptures produced between 1997 and 1999 in Beigao village, located in Chaoyang district, Beijing.
The retrospective features document displays, a self-portrait wall and reconstructed scenes from the artist's former residence and antique shop, situating the work within a lived history.
The exhibition coincides with the publication of the first monograph dedicated to Feng.
